Cypher is a live room where you and up to four other artists make one song together. Pick a beat, send the link, and pass the mic. Everyone hears each take as it's recorded, and when you're done you export the song or post it straight to Rapchat.

It's free, it works in your browser on desktop or phone, and it's in beta.

Soundtrack: "Flashback" by Dreuce.

How it works

  1. Start a room. Sign in, hit Start, and pick any beat on Rapchat (or upload your own).
  2. Send the link. Up to five artists can rap. Anyone else with the link can listen, chat and react.
  3. Take turns. Tap Record and you get a four-count, then you're live. Everyone in the room hears you as you go, and your take lands on your own track the moment you stop. Then the mic passes to whoever's next.
  4. Finish it together. Move parts around, leave comments on a moment in the song, and set the levels in the mixer. Everybody sees the same song.
  5. Take it with you. Export an MP3 or WAV, share the song page with everyone's credits, or post it to Rapchat.

Why turns

Rapping over the internet at the same time never sounds right, because everyone hears everyone a little late. So Cypher records one take at a time, on each artist's own device, at full quality, and lines it up to the beat for you. You still get the energy of a live session: the room hears every bar as it happens.

Tips for your first session

  • Headphones help. Wired ones keep your timing tightest.
  • Not landing on the beat? Open Mix and nudge "Your recording timing" until your takes sit right.
  • Use the chat for lyrics and ideas, and drop a comment on the exact moment you want someone to redo.
